How To Make Weed Butter

How To Make Weed Butter

Making your own cannabis infused butter is a bit of a process but anyone can do it with a few tips and regular kitchen equipment...
No need for fancy unit or butter making machines with this method!

Before cooking the weed into the butter, consider activating your cannabis products first. If you want low potency butter, you can rely on the heat of infusion to activate the THC. This is not as efficient as decarbing (activating) your cannabis before infusion. If you are looking for the maximum in psychoactive effects, you are going to want to decarb first.

Why & How To Decarb (Decarboxylate) Cannabis

WHY - Decarbing transforms THCA (non-psychoactive form) into THC (psychoactive). This will increase the potency and high feeling you get from your butter.

HOW - Use an oven thermometer to ensure your oven is heating properly, heat to 220°F.

- Spread cannabis flower or kief evenly on a glass casserole dish and cover with a lid or tinfoil.
- Bake time depends on how much cannabis there is and how wet or dry it is.
Smaller, dryer buds = 30 minutes
More than 28g or moist buds = 60 minutes
Less than 14g of kief = 20 minutes
More than 14g of kief = 50 minutes

Making sure to check and stir often to make sure it's baking evenly and not burning.

- It will be very fragrant! The flower and kief will be slightly browned when done.

- Remove from oven and let cool, still covered. This way any vaporized cannabinoids will go back into the cannabis product

- Use immediately or store in airtight container in a cool, dark place for about 1 month

Putting The Weed Into The Butter

You will need:
- 1 cup of butter, already melted
(European-style butter has a higher fat content. Which can yield a more efficient infusion)
*Fun Fact: Cannabis is drawn to fat and will infuse best with high-fat butters.
PLUS, fat makes it more bioavailable in your body so it's more easily absorbed. Which means more potent effects!*

- 3-9 grams of cannabis flower or 1-3 grams of keif
(this is TOTALLY SUBJECTIVE, everyone has a different tolerance. Depending on strains, you can do the math to calculate the potency. Generally 3g of decarbed flower into 1 cup of butter will yield about 250mg of THC in the 1 cup of infused butter)

- Minimum 12oz. canning jar and lid

- Large pot

- Oven mitt

- Strainer

- Cheesecloth

- Bowl/container

Method:
Put melted butter and cannabis into the jar and close tightly.

Add water until it almost reaches the lid of the jar, leave uncovered and bring to a simmer.

Let cook for 2 hours, adding water to maintain the level.

Ensure it doesn't reach a full boil, just a gentle simmer.

Release any pressure in the jar after the first hour by removing the lid and then resealing.

When the two hours are up carefully remove the hot jar and set it on a heat proof surface.

Put the cheesecloth in the strainer as a liner. When the jar is cool enough to handle and the butter is still a liquid, pour through cheesecloth into the bowl.

Squeeze out as much of the melted butter as you can.

When using kief, straining is not necessary.

The butter can be used immediately or stored in the fridge for 2-3 weeks and in the freezer for about 3 months.

Happy Baking!!
